UNEXPECTED BEAUJOLAIS

Goats' cheese

Whether it is from the Monts du Mâconnais or high Beaujolais, goats' cheese is a gourmet institution in our region. So much so that we don't know whether to class it with the thousand and one types of French cheese, with the aperitifs, snacks or to put it on show as a work of art.
Goats' cheese 'made in Pays Beaujolais' will never let you down. Firstly because it is the result of love from its producers and it is made from the raw milk of their own farm animals. You can buy it fresh, half-dried or matured depending on your taste.
You are unlikely to miss the little farms that produce them as you stroll through the Haut-Beaujolais.
If you go to the Gauthiers' in Ouroux, Gérard will transmit his passion for horse-riding to big and small while Linda makes her delicious goats' cheese.
Véronique and Robert Berillon are goat farmers who have opened the ferme-auberge de Pierre-Plate in Le Perréon.
Stop off at la ferme des Remparts in Saint-Loup. Blandine Trévoux will tell you about her 60-goat farm and the cheese she makes.
A few kilometres to the west, Bernadette, Lucien and Fabien Giraud will show you round their farm from milking (6:30 p.m.) to cheese making. At la ferme du Berthoud herd dog demonstrations are also organised and you can taste their wares.
At les Sauvages, Jean-Philippe Genetier (Bonnefond hamlet) puts his talent into making "organic" goat and cow cheese of all types as well as the delicious yoghurts he makes to sell at Lozanne market every week.

Farm-produced delicatessen meats

Magnin father and son raise their pigs and make their delicatessen meats in their workshop at La Ferme de Montchervet in Amplepuis. Tracability assured, flavour guaranteed.

Sweet things

In Ouroux at the Château du Bois Mireille Hyvert cooks bread in an old bread oven. With her you'll learn a lot more about bread, flour and the customs associated with them. A perfect day out with family and friends.
Still in Ouroux at Les Chassagnes don't miss the jams, cordials and fruit juices made by Viviane Amin, called 'Savoureuses du Saint-Rigaud'.
Treat yourself to the home made mead from the 'Miellerie du Fût d'Avenas'. While in Cours-la-Ville Pascal Blanchon, chocolatier, associates Beaujolais with chocolate in his speciality the 'Chiroublon'.
In Oingt, one of the most beautiful of the mediaeval villages in the Pierres Dorées, Girasole perpetuates the tradition of hand-kneaded leaven bread.

Farms to visit

Explore, discover, breath and feel are all verbs that can be used freely in Beaujolais. The Chamber of Agriculture has set up a network of 'fermes découverte' and 'fermes pédagogiques' (teaching farms) using the "Bienvenue à la ferme" logo with the aid of the Gîtes de France du Rhône.
This formula is aimed at groups from schools and youth organisations and is a very concrete approach to agriculture through days or half-days run by the farmer. There are 19 farms with diverse activities from lumberjacking to poultry through milk farming, donkeys, cereals, bee-keeping and wine. The visitors are given a very friendly welcome.
To learn a little (or a lot) more about the people called farmers there is nothing better than hands on experience. It is a really excellent idea. An intelligent link is made between the subject the child learns at school and concrete examples on the farm. For example eco-citizenship and agri-environment for civic education or the farm through drawing, poems and country sounds for art.
Its simple, well done and fascinating!
