Hello! For today’s Beaujolais Moment, I’ve brought you to the Beaujolais-Villages appellation, one of the 12 Beaujolais AOCs!

This is the Château de Montmelas, at the southernmost point of the Beaujolais-Villages production area. It looks like Sleeping Beauty’s castle, doesn’t it? That’s what locals call it! The castle’s fortified appearance came from 19th century restorations, but in the Middle Ages it was the stronghold of the Lords of Beaujeu. They were a family of illustrious landowners that gave its name to Beaujolais.

In the château, and throughout the Beaujolais-Villages territory, most of the production is red and nouveau wine – the Beaujolais-Villages-Nouveau. But there are rosé and white wines too!

Most of the vines are in the northern half of the Beaujolais region surrounding the production areas of the 10 crus. The vines grow on mostly granitic soil on sometimes very steep slopes. Truly tenacious plants! The wide variety of terroirs produces a huge diversity of expressive, intensely fruity and scented wines. Some of them have good cellaring potential.

Serve a red Beaujolais-Villages with roast chicken or chicken cooked in sauce with a potato gratin. I guarantee you’ll love it!
