On 11 January 2025, the Cit\u00e9 Internationale in Lyon hosted the 15th<\/sup> International Gamay Competition. It brought together 727 cuv\u00e9es from 4 different countries (France, Switzerland, Italy and Canada). After recognising a C\u00f4te de Brouilly<\/a>\u00a0in 2023 and a\u00a0Moulin-\u00e0-Vent<\/a>\u00a0the year before, this year a\u00a0Beaujolais Villages<\/a> won the title of \u201cWorld\u2019s Best Gamay\u201d!<\/p>\n\n

A panel of experts<\/h2>\n\n

This competition is the opportunity for wine experts and informed enthusiasts to take on the role of panellists and judge a wide range of Gamay wines. On 11 January, 150 people came together to blind-taste the 727 cuv\u00e9es entered in the competition. This first tasting allowed the panellists to award gold and silver medals. \n<\/p>\n\n

After this first selection process, it was then the turn of the \u201csuper jury\u201d, comprising 5 experts (a wine educator, an oenologist, a restaurant owner, a wine merchant, and a sommelier), to carry out a further blind taste test of the gold medallists in order to award the title of \u201cWorld\u2019s Best Gamay\u201d.<\/p>\n\n

This year, the experts awarded 228 medals. 92 gold medals and 136 silver medals were given to the best Gamays during this tasting.<\/p>\n\n

The World\u2019s Best Gamay is a Beaujolais Villages<\/h2>\n\n

The trophy for the \u201cWorld\u2019s Best Gamay\u201d 2025 was awarded to Beaujolais Villages, Cuv\u00e9e du Relais 2023 from Relais du Colombier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located in Marchampt, Relais du Colombier<\/a>\u00a0has been in V\u00e9ronique and Laurent Ducrot\u2019s hands for more than 30 years. The couple cultivates 7 hectares of vines in the Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages appellations. They are the 5th<\/sup> generation of the Ducrot family to do so. Together, they also host tourists in their guesthouses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
